Passage: Judith and Gerson Leiber

We discovered this previous week of the passing, inside of hours of one another, of purse clothier Judith Lieber and artist Gerson Lieber, her husband of 72 years.

Born in Hungary, Judith Lieber had a calling: “I liked purses, so my mom stated, ‘Neatly, why do not you pass into that?’ So I did!”

She and her husband, referred to as Gus, arrived on this nation from Hungary in 1947.

Lieber went into industry for herself in 1963.

“I used to make the patterns and I used to pack each and every piece,” she recalled to “Sunday Morning” in 2002. “And Gus used to ship them uptown to the shops. That is how we began.”

Whimsically embellished with hundreds of coloured beads, and promoting for lots of hundreds of greenbacks, Judith Lieber’s purses turned into THE model accent.

A 2002 exhibition at Washington’s Corcoran Gallery featured Hillary Clinton’s personalized “Socks the Cat” bag, at the side of Barbara Bush’s “Millie the Canine.”

Judith and Gus Lieber each died final Saturday, either one of middle assaults.  

She was once 97.  He was once 96.
